Catalogue Note
In the oeuvre of Adolf Dietrich still-lifes were one of the main motifs along with landscapes, depictions of gardens and portraits. Ever since his adolescence, the painter was fascinated by flora and fauna. Despite not always correctly depicting perspective, Dietrich always painted his subject matters in a realistic manner. He was self-taught and his style is attributed to Naïve Painting as well as Neue Sachlichkeit. Around 1930 the artist replaced pencil-sketches in his notebooks by black & white photographs. The present work, with its butterflies in wonderfully expressive colors, features among the most beautiful and vibrantly colored paintings of the artist.
