Condition

Has not been relined. The canvas is slightly buckling. There is a crack and a paint loss in the red, in the right arm, just behind the figure's hair. There is a paint loss in the lower left side of the tunic. Some fly spots are visible in the grey area behind the figure and in the upper left edge. There are minor retouching visible under UV light along the upper margin Otherwise, in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

Large format and important single figure made for the mural for the new town hall in Hannover. The swearer pictured here is the second figure to the right of the orator in the first row of the composition. Parts of the folds of the cloak may have been painted with the help of a pupil of Ferdinand Hodler.

Grossformatige und bedeutende Einzelfigur für das Wandbild im Neuen Rathaus in Hannover. Beim Schwörenden handelt es sich um die zweite Figur rechts des Redners in der ersten Reihe. Teile der Gewandfalten des Mantels wurden eventuell unter der Mitarbeit eines Schülers Ferdinand Hodler's gemalt.
