Description

  • Wood
the four panels with carved and gilt decoration on a russet-brown lacquer ground, depicting a gathering of Daoist Immortals on one side, the reverse with a longevity scene with deer gamboling under pine amidst rockwork issuing lingzhi, all within a foliate border

Provenance

Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Holden (1888-1982), Raleigh, North Carolina, acquired in China between 1916 and 1940, and thence by descent.

Condition

The screen most likely originally had six panels. There are losses of lacquer, particularly around the feet, apron, and edges, with the largest loss being approx. 8.5 x 3.5 cm with associated lifting. There is general lifting of the lacquer and wear to both the lacquer and gilt decoration. The gilding has been retouched. Each panel is set within a modern reinforcing black-painted wood frame on the long sides which have metal hinges joining them together.
