Description

  • wood
the earlier coromandel lacquer panels depicting the festive birthday celebration of the Tang dynasty general Guo Ziyi, set into later polychromed and giltwood surrounds comprised of carved figural scenes and gilt archaistic openwork panels

Provenance

San Francisco Private Collection.

Condition

The panels have expected vertical buckling and cracks with associated lifted and flaked lacquer and pigments (some retouched). The panels are covered overall in a shellac that has darkened with age. The pictorial panels and their reverse have been stabilized with adhesive, particularly around the borders; the adhesive has darkened with age. The carved panels are in mostly good condition with only minor age cracks and wear to the gilding; these have been retouched and regilt over the centuries.
