Description

  • Silk
  • 46 1/2 x 30 1/2 inches
woven as brocaded satin with supplementary weft threads in contrasting colors producing an image of three vivacious four-clawed dragons leaping for 'flaming pearls' above crashing waves, composed of five separate pieces of silk, mounted on board and framed

Provenance

E & J Frankel, New York, 2011.

Condition

Three supplementary fragments of matching brocade (possibly original to this textile) were added along the left and right sides to allow the textile panel to take a rectangular shape for the frame (as illustrated in the catalog). The fabric has scattered tears, some of which are in-filled with green paper. Some of the embroidery has been lost. There are stains throughout (probably from water damage), particularly at the bottom, center, and left side. Please note that the textile was not removed from the frame for examination.
