the shallow rounded sides rising from a short slightly splayed foot to an everted rim, decorated overall with a mottled brownish-black glaze and transparent glaze over white slip in producing of an unusual color contrast resembling yin-yang, the foot rim left unglazed revealing the pale buff-colored stoneware body

It is rare to find Cizhou wares with the same design as the present dish, although a meiping, decorated in the same style, in the Kai-Yin Lo Collection, is included in the exhibition Bright as Silver.
