of softwood, possibly nanmu, each rectangular panel intricately carved in varying degrees of openwork relief  providing foreground, middle and background with a famous poet enjoying the pleasures of wine (Li Bai, He Zhizhang, Zhang Xu, Cui Songzhi, Jiao Sui, Li Shizi, Su Jin and Wang Jin), as described in the poem 'Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup' by the Tang dynasty poet Du Fu (8)

Condition

Several of the panel supports with horizontal splits and with horizontal patch repairs due to splitting. There are filled repairs to horizontal splitting on the panel frames and some into the openwork carving. The carvings with scattered chips and losses to extremities such as leaves, branches and finger tips. There is wear to the surfaces overall consistent with age.
