Catalogue Note
Chen first studied under Tao Xiruo and later became a student of the famous seal carving master Zhao Shuru (1874-1945). As a member of the Xiling Society, Chen was especially renowned for carving seals in the yuanzhuwen style, a style that was particularly popular during the Yuan dynasty and is characterized by using very fine strokes to form the characters. Chen carved seals for many of the important painters of the 20th century, such as Zhang Daqian, Pu Xinyu, Wu Hufan, etc., and it is believed that he made over thirty thousand seals during his lifetime.
