A nayika (heroine) holding the stem of a hookah, exchanges blossoms with her sakhi (confidante) within the walled confines of the zenana - as female musicians and handmaidens look on.

Condition

Good and stable overall condition. The painting has been laid down on archival paper. Pinholes on four corners of folio border have been repaired. Minor abrasions to left edge of blue inner folio border. A few spots of abrasions on the green foreground, and two spots on gray rock work on upper right corner, all clearly visible in catalogue illustration. Light flaking to white pigment in the following areas, face of the attendant on far left edge, veil of attendant in blue dress, and nose and forehead of attendant in green dress holding a white fan above the head of central figure. Two further small flakes to white pigment on horizontal architectural feature at center. This painting has not been inspected outside of its frame.
