the deity carved in lalitasana, with right hand resting on the bent right knee and the left hand poised on the raised left knee, wearing a dhoti and draped with scarves and shawl, the face with benevolent expression framed by long knotted tresses and an ornate diadem, seated on a lotus throne borne on the back of a caparisoned roaring lion, all supported on a rectangular plinth, wood stand (2)

Provenance

Collection of Prof. Benjamin Roland, Jr. (1904-1972), Cambridge, Massachusetts .
Acquired in the 1940-60s, and thence by descent.

Condition

The figures of Guanyin and the lion reassembled from multiple breaks, including breaks through the waist and neck of Guanyin, and breaks throughout the lion (particularly across his center, chest, and legs), among other places. The beast's legs and the lotus support under his belly all with restoration including in-fill. Please note that this sculpture was not removed from the wood base for examination.
