Catalogue Note

An Imperial hunting lodge in present-day Poland, Spala was a place cherished by Nicholas II and his family.  In a letter to his mother Empress Maria Feodorova, the Emperor lovingly described ‘this quiet place which is so dear to me for its many happy memories’. The family spent their ‘quiet spells’ there hunting deer and boar, entertaining guests and enjoying private musical performances.
