Catalogue Note

This platter or one identical to it was used to advertise the Exhibition of Soviet Porcelain commemorating the Tenth Jubilee of the Revolution and was photographed for the November 1927 issue of Red Panorama magazine (illustrated). The design was called 'The International Anniversary' after the Communist International, an organisation promoting socialist revolutionary values around the world.

Marte R. Gomez was a Mexican politician and diplomat, a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party and the International Olympic Committee.  He was instrumental in Mexico City’s successful bid to the host the Summer Olympics in 1968.  He travelled frequently in the USSR and met with Brezhnev at the Kremlin in 1962.  A great patron of the arts, his collection included a number of works by Diego Rivera.  Sotheby's would like to thank Vladimir Levshenkov for his assistance in researching this lot.
