Condition

Original canvas. The tacking edges have been taped over with brown paper. There is a small repaired tear in the lower left corner as seen from the reverse. Small areas of retouching to the outer of ring of water around the figure, the upper left and the centre of the top edge are visible to the naked eye. There is an area of paint loss along a crack by the stones in the lower centre of the composition and another where the water meets the shore in the lower right. Craquelure is visible throughout, most notably in the light blue of the water where some of the cracks are slightly raised. There is a diagonal surface scratch in the blue below the upper edge and another in the muddy water in the lower right quadrant. Inspection under UV light reveals the aforementioned areas of retouching visible to the naked eye and to the area corresponding to the canvas repair. There is further minor retouching to the top corners, to the scarf and shoulder of the figure as well as some scattered retouching elsewhere. Held in a simple modern frame.
