Condition

Original canvas on its original stretcher which bears the remnants of a label from the Chicago exhibition. There are stretcher bar marks as well as frame abrasions with associated paint loss along all four edges. There is a dent in the very centre of the composition and an area of buckling in the red below this. There are a number of scratches to the paint layer, the most significant of which is the horizontal one above the centre of the left edge and another longer one running diagonally down from the far left of the horizontal one. Craquelure and drying cracks are visible throughout the composition. Inspection under UV light reveals restoration to an area over the lower stretcher bar mark and a few other minor spots. The thick varnish layer prevents a more conclusive analysis. Held in a wooden and gold-painted frame. Unexamined out of frame.
