Born in Vienna in 1889, Rheinhardt associated with the Viennese Expressionists while at university. In 1924 he moved to Italy where he wrote a biography of Eleonora Duse, his most successful book. In 1928 he relocated to the Côte d’Azur. Arrested in 1943 for his participation in the French Resistance, he was handed over to the Gestapo and died at Dachau.
