Original canvas which is securely attached to the original stretcher. There is a small, transparent repair patch visible on the reverse. There are minor frame abrasions with associated paint loss along the edges. A faint stretcher bar mark runs horizontally across the centre of the canvas, and there is a small crack to the sky just below the clouds, approximately 12cm from the left edge. There are further minor cracks in the lower left quadrant and the upper left corner. There is minor craquelure to the areas of impasto, and the surface is slightly dirty. A small area of retouching on the left below the horizon line, corresponding to the aforementioned patch, is visible to the naked eye. Also visible is a faint line of retouching running diagonally through the centre. Inspection under UV-light confirms the aforementioned retouchings as well as showing further retouching scattered throughout. Held is a modern gilt wood frame. Unexamined out of frame.
