Condition

Original canvas. There is an uneven layer of surface dirt and raised lines of craquelure throughout. UV light reveals retouching in areas to the top left, to the left edge and some minor areas in the top right quadrant. Held in an ornate gold-painted frame. Unexamined out of frame.

The Russian merchantman Dolphin was trading in the North Sea between circa 1845-1878 with cargoes such as flax, firewood, sawn fir and coal. Contemporary newspapers reference her passages to ports including Leith, Dundee, Swansea, Aberdeen, Libau and Riga.
