Catalogue Note
Valery Panov trained as a ballet dancer in Leningrad and performed with the Kirov Theatre from 1964 to 1972. He came to international attention in 1972 when he applied for an exit visa to emigrate to Israel, which resulted in his expulsion from the theatre and two years of harassment by the KGB and eventual imprisonment. He was finally allowed to leave for Israel in 1974, three years after Chemiakin had been forced out of the USSR and settled in Paris, where the present portrait was painted.
