Description
- Wool, pile
- approximately 542 by 347cm; 17ft. 8in., 11ft. 4in.
Condition
Overall measurements: 347cm across the top, 341cm across the bottom, 542cm the left hand side, 538cm the right hand side.
Flexible handle. Pile varies from 4/5mm in the border to 3mm and knotheads and, in minor areas, foundation in the field - these areas visible as white from the photograph. There are some minor scattered repairs throughout, most notably to the lower left of the madder field where there are four vertical strip repairs commencing from the medallion to above the lower left figure's forehead. The longest approx. 9cm and the widest approx 4cm, one of these repairs has been re-piled and there is some very minor re-piling found elsewhere for example the outer guard in the lower left corner. There is some evidence of foldwear, for example upper central left hand side of border, measuring approx 10cm. There are some dark surface marks, mostly visible from image, one example to be found lower right hand corner in both the madder motif and indigo border - the indigo border mark blends with the dye but is visible from reverse. Both ends with fringing and overlocked. Sidecords partially replaced.
Would benefit from judicious restoration and a professional clean. A very unusual design and exceptionally confident use of colour.
