Oil-based etching ink, pasted papers and aquatint printed in red and black, a unique collage, 1987-88, signed in pencil and dated, also inscribed '57' on the verso, from the Red and Black series, on Whatman wove paper, with the artist's blindstamp, framed

Condition

The work is in good condition, the full sheet. A few small fox marks and occasional spots of discoloration due to adhesive. (A few light handling creases at sheet edges.) The verso with spots of discoloration due to adhesive scattered throughout, some light surface soiling, and a few small fox marks.

Catalogue Note

This previously unrecorded work is a part of the Red and Black series of unique collages, which were included in the 2012 catalogue raisonné of Motherwell’s paintings and collages. The work will be included in an online supplement to the catalogue raisonné on the Dedalus Foundation’s website. The collage includes fragments of the 1980 aquatint Put Out All Flags (Walker Art Center 263), the 1985 aquatint Wanderers (W.A.C. 364) and the 1986 aquatint Yellow Flight (W.A.C. 367).
