Description

  • Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
  • Self-portrait Etching at a Window (B., Holl. 22; New Holl. 240; H. 229)
  • etching
  • sheet: 151 by 130mm 5 7/8 by 2 7/8 in
Etching and drypoint, 1648, a fine, rich and dark impression of the fourth state (of five), New Hollstein's fourth state (of nine)

Condition

Trimmed to the subject at left and right, and by approx. 3mm. into the subject at bottom, losing 3mm. of the dark table area there, the whole sheet laid onto wove (?) paper, the edges of which protrude very slightly, this backing causing a minor crinkling of the whole sheet resulting in further shrinking of the length of the print (approx. 6mm.), and has a slightly adverse affect on the appearance of the etching.
