Engraving, 1589, a fine impression of this large, rare print, the swelling lines on the figure of Hercules dazzling in effect, the first state (of two), on paper with a Coat of Arms with Rampant Bears and Three Rings surmounted by a Crown watermark (Briquet 1164, dated 1600-3), framed
Condition
Trimmed on the platemark, leaving a narrow fillet of blank paper around the borderline, a 25mm. vertical tear extending from the top sheet edge, two short horizontal tears extending from the left sheet edge, one approx. 20mm and backed, the other 7mm., five creases verso, two split 5mm from the lower and left sheet edges respectively, a minor paper adhesion to Hercules' pubic area, some paper discolouration (more pronounced towards the upper sheet edge and verso), a waterstain at the upper sheet edge verso (not affecting the recto), the central part of the usual horizontal drying fold and a portion of the left reverse sheet edge backed, some areas of paper thinning throughout the sheet, lesser defects, framed.
