Catalogue Note

From September to March 2015, the Brooklyn Museum presented Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe, an exhibition that explored the rich history of this most titillating accessory.  Six artists were commissioned to produce an original video to accompany the exhibition.  For his entry, boundary-pushing fashion photographer Steven Klein filmed a model in red patent leather stilettos with sharp metal spikes furiously scratching the hood of a red automobile.  The present unique photograph is a film still from that provocative video, produced as as large-scale chromogenic print in a limited edition ‘1/1’ only available at Sotheby’s.

Klein is the subject of FETISH, the 67th edition of VISIONAIRE.  Founded by Cecilia Dean and James Kaliardos in 1991, VISIONAIRE conceptualizes and produces public art installations, films, experiences, branded content, art multiples, and products — all curated through the lens of art, fashion and contemporary culture.  For their 67th edition, VISIONAIRE partnered with Klein to produce a limited edition collector’s series of 10 photographic prints by the artist.  In celebration, Sotheby’s is honored to host a specially-designed video installation by VISIONAIRE and Klein.  The video installation and the photograph offered here will be on view during the Photographs pre-sale exhibition from 30 September through 4 October.
