  • 1/4 plate daguerreotype
quarter-plate daguerreotype, with a modern seal, a hand-cut mat with 'M. V.' and 'B. C. 1857' hand-embossed, cased, 1857

Provenance

Acquired from Mike Reffie, New York, circa 2006

Literature

Stanley B. Burns, Mirror Mirror: The Burns Collection Daguerreotypes (New York: The Burns Archive Press, 2012), pl. 69

Condition

This exceptionally vivid quarter-plate daguerreotype is in generally excellent condition. There are a few small irregular scratches in the lower portion of the image, which do not detract in any way from this luminous and impressive plate. There are 4 very small dark spots, possible tarnish, in the lower left corner. The hand-cut mat is somewhat discolored along the edges. Notes on the new seal indicate that this plate has been lightly cleaned and re-sealed by Casey Waters, Exeter, NH, in August 2017, and that the plate has the following hallmarks: star; doublé; A Goudin 40. The attractive floral-stamped case, with gilt rope detailing and red velvet lining, is in generally very good to excellent condition. There is some wear along the spine and edges.
