Description

  • André Kertész
  • Distortion No. 173
  • ferrotyped gelatin silver print
ferrotyped, the photographer's '31 Union Sq., N. Y. C., 3' studio stamp (Phillips NY5) and numbered '173A' in pencil and ink on the reverse, circa 1933, probably printed between 1946 and 1952 (Distortions, unpaginated)

Condition

This ferrotyped print is in generally very good condition. When examined in raking light, characteristics that are typical of ferrotyping--tiny pitting of the surface and striations--are visible. These do not detract from the overall attractive appearance of this print. There are two small tape remnants in the lower corners on the reverse. In 'André Kertész: Of Paris and New York,' Sandra Phillips, David Travis, and Weston Naef publish the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps that Kertész used throughout his career. Our dating of this print is based upon the authors' assessment of the use dates of New York Stamp #5 on the reverse of the print: 1946 through 1952. When this print is examined under ultraviolet light, it does not appear to fluoresce.
