Catalogue Note

Two variants of this image are known to be the last portraits of Baudelaire by Carjat. This is an earlier albumen print compared to the known silver print from 1903. It is, to our knowledge unique and does not appear in any public collection. In the obituary announcement in Le Monde on September 7, 1867, there is an illustration from a drawing after photograph. It is not clearly visible from which variant this one was made.
