Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. There are the inevitable dents, marks, cracks and scratches due to age and use. There are chips and losses to the veneer, especially to the back feet and to the front part of the seatrail. The veneer is lifting to some places. There are restorations to the veneer with 'gomme laque' paste filling and there are some replacements. Three wooden blocks reinforce the fauteuil de bureau under the seatrail. The suede upholstery is later and in good overall condition. The construction is firm. Very elegant model.

Catalogue Note

The type of tulipwood and kingwood trelliswork parquetry employed on this extremely rare desk armchair is typical of furniture produced in Rome during the third quarter of the 18th century, and is called 'a gratelle'. It is found on a select group of fine commodes, including a pair sold Sotheby's London, 12 December 1991, lot 144, and a single one sold Sotheby's Rome, 18 May 2004, lot 493. Related parquetry is found on a pair of Roman commodes in the Palazzo del Quirinale, Rome (ill. A. González-Palacios, I Mobili italiani, Milan, 1996, pp. 74-75).
