Catalogue Note

The artist could have been inspired by the German colonies who settled in the United States, especially in Pennsylvania where 270 000 German people were identified in 1790. In the 1830s, Philadelphia counted several German schools, associations and newspapers.
The buildings represented here have not been identified. They could simply show restructured or imaginary views.
