Catalogue Note
Goudji est né en 1941 en Géorgie. Après des études de sculpture à Tbilissi de 1958 à 1962, il s'installe à Moscou où il se heurte très vite à la rigidité du système soviétique. Grâce à sa future épouse, française, il quitte la Russie pour s'installer à Paris, sur la butte Montmartre. Son style très particulier lui confère vite une renommée grandissante. Lancé par la galerie Claude-Bernard, il nourrit également un vif intérêt pour les objets sacrés. Il fournira ainsi le mobilier liturgique de plusieurs cathédrales et abbayes dont Chartres, Notre-Dame ou Tournus, ainsi que le marteau de la Porte Sainte pour le Saint-Père ou la châsse de Padre Pio. Sa production, tant profane que sacrée, allie toujours avec une grande élégance métal (argent et or) et pierres dures.
Goudji concoit et réalise entièrement ses oeuvres seul. Ce sont des oeuvres uniques qui font de lui un des orfèvres contemporains les plus admirés.
