Catalogue Note

Alexander James Strachan fut adoubé par Arthur Grimwade comme le ‘Paul Storr’ des boîtes en or, pour ces techniques remarquables et parce qu’il était le fournisseur principal de Rundell, Bridge et Rundell, parmi bien d’autres marchands de l’époque (A. Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, London, 1976, p. 673). Entre 1799, date de l’insculpation de son poinçon, et 1835, moment où il semble s’être retiré des affaires, Strachan produisit le plus grand nombre de boîtes, étuis et tabatières en or sous les formes les plus extravagantes, comme le lot 19.
