Description
- Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A.
- Portrait of Lady Henrietta Wynn
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is thick and discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the opaque varnish, although a more recent campaign of retouching is found in some scattered, very small areas, such as small strengthenings in the sitter's eyes and to a small area, upper left. An older campaign appears to be visible in the face of the sitter and to small areas through the sitter's dress, either to old losses or to disguise the appearance of craquelure. There is evidence of wear throughout the painting, particularly in the sitter's face and hair, but elsewhere the thickly applied impasto brushwork is still well preserved. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
