Description
- Corrado Giaquinto
- The Education of the Virgin
- oil on canvas
- 73.3 x 62.3 cm.
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Phillips, 2 December 1997, lot 38 (as Corrado Giaquinto).
Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish appears clear but rather uneven. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the lower margin and a concentrated area of retouching, possibly to an old tear, running down the right-hand side of the Virgin to an area encompassing much of the plinth, lower left. There are other scattered spot retouchings, particularly in the upper right corner, and careful retouching to the faces of the Virgin and Saint Anne, apparently to disguise the appearance of craquelure. In overall fair condition.
