Condition

The canvas has been lined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish appears slightly uneven. The impasto paintwork is well-preserved. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals strengthening to the dark embroidery of the sitter's coat. There is also some retouching around the margins and some lines of retouching in the flesh tones of the sitter's right hand, his neck, chin and around his right eye. Some further areas of restoration are found lower left, and in the background to the left of the sitter. Offered in a carved and moulded gilt wood frame with oak leaf decoration, with a few losses.
