Description

  • Venetian School, 16th Century
  • Portrait of a man, half length, in armour
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Lionel Sartoris (his collector's book plate attached to reverse).

Condition

The painting has an old relining which has pressed the paint surface. The paint is slightly unclean and the varnish is discoloured. There are some old stable restorations to tears on the left and lower margins. Furthermore under ultra violet inspection a small number of further restorations to minor scratches are revealed on the nose and chest of the sitter. There is some very minor retouching to the curtain in the upper right. There is a thick layer of varnish. Overall the painting is in good and stable condition. The work is offered in a carved gilt wood frame in very good condition.
