Description

  • Willem van Herp the Elder
  • The Ecstasy of Saint Augustine
  • oil on copper, an octagon

Condition

The copper plate is very slightly bowed towards the upper margin. The paint surface is slightly unclean with some minor paint losses to the Bishop's robe and two further very small losses in the sky by the left hand angel's left arm, and the masonry on the right hand side. There is a restored 4 centimetre horizontal scratch to the female figure on the right, and a smaller restored scratch to Christ's right arm. Ultra violet inspection reveals an uneven varnish with some old restoration to the margins and a very small number of spot retouchings. Overall the condition is good. The work is offered in an octagonal, red imitation tortoiseshell, and ripple moulded frame.

Catalogue Note

This composition is based on the altarpiece by Sir Anthony Van Dyck, The Ecstasy of Saint Augustine at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp.1 Pieter de Jode the Younger (1606–1674) is recorded as having engraved this painting in reverse before 1634, from which the present work could well have derived.2 The figure of the kneeling woman at the left foreground of this painting replaces that of a kneeling elderly man in black in Van Dyck's original composition.
