Condition

The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: Verso: The soft wood support has a vertical split running down the length of the left hand side, with minor paint loss along it. The paint layer is scuffed and abraded with visible paint loss and thinness . Previous restoration is in evidence with strengthening of the decorative components. Original gilding has been slightly abraded. The varnish covering the surface is discoloured. Recto: The vertical split , to the right hand side, is stepped with minor paint loss along it. A smaller 15cm vertical split can be detected from the top edge. The paint layer is well preserved with 1–2 areas of minor instability; a scattering of pin prick losses can be detected across the surface. Many finer details are intact and the paint is in good original and preserved condition. Removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality. The engaged frame has minor chips.
