Literature

J. P. Richter, 'The Mond Collection', London 1910, vol. III, p. 481;
L. Mortari, Francesco Salviati, Rome 1992, p. 161, cat no. 187 (as doubtfully attributed to Salviati).

Condition

The panel is constructed of a single piece of poplar with a horizontal support baton across the centre of the reverse. There is an old surface hairline crack running vertically through the centre of the panel. The paint surface has suffered from wear - especially visible in the dark tones of the sitter's coat, his beard, neck and ear. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings along the aforementioned surface crack and other spot retouchings through the sitter's face, and scattered in his clothing and through the background. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Mortari notes similarities between the sitter in the present painting and the sculptor or goldsmith represented in Salviati's portrait in the Patrizi Collection, Rome.1 The two sitters are indeed alike in their physiognomy and in the details of the attire, for example the soft cap and collar, and the cut of his overcoat.
