Provenance

By descent in the family of the present owner for at least two generations.

Condition

The panel is uncradled, and very slightly bowed but stable. It is composed of three vertical planks joined with butterfly battens (visible in the catalogue illustration). The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is uneven. There are two small losses in the lower right and upper left corners. There are areas of moderate blistering in both lower corners. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching throughout the sitter's face, beard and ruff, and scattered in the background. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame with some losses.
