Description

  • Bernard van Orley
  • The Virgin and Child
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Possibly with Colnaghi, London;
Acquired for Mrs F. Samuel by her brother-in-law Alfred de Pass, c. 1904;
By whom sold London, Christie’s, 25 October 1957, lot 74 (as Bouts), for 450 guineas to Neefs;
With Galerie Robert Finck, Brussels;
From whom acquired by the family of the present owner.

Condition

In overall good condition. The panel is cradled, probably to support two old vertical cracks, the first running down 2 in. from the left margin, the second down the centre of the panel, through the left of the Virgin's face (visible in the catalogue illustration). Otherwise the panel appears flat and stable. The varnish is uneven and somewhat discoloured, but the paint surface is very well-preserved and the faces and hair of the figures are in very good condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouchings at the margins, but otherwise very little intervention. It would appear that there are some old strengthenings to the dark tones of the background behind the figures.
