Description
- Joseph Wright of Derby, A.R.A.
- Portrait of Reverend John Linton
- inscribed centre left: Anno/ Aetatis Suae/ 74
- oil on canvas, in a painted oval
Provenance
With Thomas Agnew and Sons, London.
Condition
The canvas is lined and has a somewhat discoloured varnish. There is a minor degree of wear in some areas of the dark tones of the sitters clothing, and some scuffs to the paint surface from frame abrasion. A distinct craquelure has developed throughout, but there are no major restorations or damages visible. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a fine web of small retouchings throughout - only to minimalize the effect of the craquelure - although the face and wig of the sitter remain relatively untouched. There are some retouchings at the margins to the frame abrasions.
In fair overall condition.
Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition, with only a few chips and losses.
