Condition
The canvas is unlined. The paint surface has not been recently cleaned and has an old, discoloured varnish. There is a 1 cm tear to the lower centre of the canvas. Under ultraviolet inspection there is some minor retouching, principally on the right hand side of the face of the sitter. There is very small localised retouching to the background. The picture is offered in a ebonised carved frame, with a gilt wood oval slip. The frame has some losses to the carving. Overall the painting is in fair original condition.
