  • Still life of roses, lilies and other flowers in a glass vase on a marble ledge
  • signed lower left: Corn. Kick
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale ('The Collection of a Gentleman, deceased'), London, Christie's, 17 March 1916, lot 50, for £15.15s. (as Rachel Ruysch);
Sir Robert Witt (1872–1952);
Thence by family descent.

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along all four margins, especially along the upper margin; some strengthening in the dark background around the leaves on the left, the lily, and the lowest rose; and some scattered retouching in the marble shelf. Further inspection is impeded by an opaque, milky varnish, but there appears to be old retouching to a small loss in the leftmost leaf, as well as possibly some delicate retouching to disguise the appearance of craquelure. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame with applied spiral and floral decoration, in good condition.
