Provenance
By direct family descent from the sitter to the present owner.
Condition
The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is relatively clear and even. There are some surface scuffs along all four margins. Ultra violet inspection reveals some minor retouching in the sitter's arm and throughout her chest and face to disguise the network of craquelure. There is also an area of restoration approximately 3 x 6 centimetres to a previous damage, in the upper right. There are also minor strengtheningss in the dark tones in the background and the drapery. The work is offered in a carved gilt wood frame with some losses.
