  • Italian School, 14th century
  • Christ as the Man of Sorrows
  • tempera and gold ground on poplar panel, in an engaged frame

Provenance

Franz von Lenbach (1836–1904), Munich;
His daughter, Gabriele Neven DuMont (1899–1978), Cologne;
Thence by descent to the present owners.

Exhibited

Cologne, Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, on loan since 1968 (inv. dep. 381; bears Gemälde-Inventar 1925 label on the reverse).

Literature

R. Budde (ed.), Wallraf-Richartz-Museum Köln, Vollständiges Verzeichnis der Gemäldesammlung, Cologne 1986, pp. 39 and 334 (with incorrect dimensions).

Condition

The panel is flat and stable. The paint surface is dirty with some abrasion that is visible in the catalogue image. Evidence of old woodworm is visible throughout the panel and integral frame. The pigment throughout the hair and the flesh tones of the arms and stomach of Christ are better preserved. There are some discoloured retouchings to old losses visible to the naked eye in the chest of Christ and in his wrist. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals little other intervention.
