Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear. Under ultra violet inspection two large strips of retouching along the upper margin and in the lower left corner are visible. The varnish is revealed to be even and there is minor scattered retouching throughout. The work is offered without a frame.

Catalogue Note

Alessandro Magnasco produced two drawings of Hagar and the Angel, both of which are in the collection at Palazzo Bianco, Genoa.1 While the three compositions are similar overall, the gestures of the figures vary slightly in each treatment of the subject and in the drawings Hagar reclines at left rather than at right.
