Provenance

Acquired by the previous owner in 1953;
By whom sold, Paris, Audap & Mirabaud, 9 December 2016, lot 32 (as attributed to the Master of the 1540s).

Condition

The panel is flat and uncradled, and has been beveled on all four sides. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is clear. Under ultra violet inspection an uneven varnish is revealed. There is an area of retouching on the right hand margin, at the sitter's shoulder and in the same position at the other shoulder. There are a handful of other match-head sized areas of retouching in the face and in the background. The work is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
