Description

  • Follower of Michelangelo Merisi called Caravaggio
  • The Gamblers
  • possibly signed on the neck of the lute with initials: A.P.
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured and streaky. There are two horizontal surface scratches running parallel to the lower edge of the table (visible in the catalogue illustration). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching scattered along all four margins, and scattered along a horizontal line through the centre of the painting caused by the stretcher. There are also retouchings to parts of the background, the face and costume of the left-most figure, in the thumb and hand of the lute player, around the dog's head, and in the floor, particularly lower centre and lower right. There are also strengthenings in the costume of the right-most figure and in the dog's coat. In overall good condition. Offered in a plain wood slip frame in good condition.
