Description
- Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer
- Still lifes with carnations, morning glory, zagara and other flowers in glass vases on stone ledges
- a pair, both oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 29 October 2003, lot 53.
Condition
In overall good condition. The canvases are both relined, the paint surfaces are slightly dirty and the varnishes are slightly discoloured and uneven. The painting with the zagara flowers has a pinprick loss in the centre of the upper margin, and the painting with carnations has two small losses, either side of the vase. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals the patchy and milky varnish, beneath which it is difficult to discern previous restoration, but there appears to be some retouching in the margins and corners of both paintings, as well as some strengthenings to the dark backgrounds. There are tiny spot retouchings scattered in the flowers themselves, but these are largely well-preserved. Offered in gesso-moulded gilt and painted wood frames with some losses.
