Description

  • Giovanni Stanchi
  • A garland of flowers with the Immaculate Conception
  • oil on canvas

Condition

In overall good condition. The canvas is relined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured and rather uneven. The blues in the Madonna's robe have degraded somewhat. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of retouching: older restoration is found in the dark background in the centre behind the Madonna, while more recent retouchings are found along all four margins, in the whites of the Madonna's robes, and there are a handful of pinprick retouchings in her hands and face. The floral still life remains largely untouched. Offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The figure of the Madonna is probably the work of another, as yet unidentified, hand.
