Provenance

Condition

In overall very good condition. The canvas is relined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals careful and sensitively-rendered retouching to some of the darks around the silhouettes of some of the flowers, and a more recent patch of retouching, measuring approx. 2 x 3 cm. in the drape to the lower right of the vase. Offered in a dark wood Dutch-style frame in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

Lachtropius painted forest-floor still lifes in the style of Otto Marseus van Schrieck, but his better-known flower still lifes such as this one are strongly orientated towards those of Willem van Aelst and Hendrik de Fromantiou from the same time. A similar picture, dated a year earlier, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.1
